How to Lighten Hair Without Bleach

1. Lemon juice

It is true lemon juice tops the list when mentioning methods for skin lightening but who would have thought that it also works for the hair?  Using lemon juice has become one of the most popular and effective methods of lightening hair without bleach. You can apply it to your entire hair or apply to some parts as you desire. You can get the bottled lemon juice for this process or buy fresh ones and squeeze out the juice. To get effective results, use pure lemon juice.


Apply lemon juice to your hair while it is wet; do not rinse. Let it sit in your hair while you sit outside in the sun. The UV rays of the sun trigger the lightening effect in lemon juice, hence, it is essential that you expose your hair to the sun for 30 to 60 minutes. This method works gradually, not once. So, you can try it out once every week and your hair will be lightened over time.  To avoid the sun damaging your skin,  wear sunscreen on the exposed parts of your body.

After the sun therapy, moisturize your hair with a generous amount of conditioner. This is because lemon juice is highly acidic and can dehydrate your hair.

2. Honey

This sweet food can also be used to lighten your hair. It contains a little amount of hydrogen peroxide which has been proven to cause a lightening effect. Asides lightening your hair, honey is a very great food for the hair. It has antibacterial properties. It will also make your hair vibrant and glowing. Honey is available everywhere and easy to get, but you have to be careful, so you will not purchase the diluted ones. To safely and effectively lighten your hair, get original raw honey; not commercial or pasteurized.


Mix 1 to 2  tablespoons of raw honey in a cup of water and apply to your hair thoroughly. Let this mixture sit in your hair for an hour, then wash off.

Instead of water, you can mix the honey with your hair conditioner. Mix ⅓ cup of honey to ¼ cup of conditioner. Apply the mixture thoroughly and evenly to your wet hair and cover with a shower cap.  Let it sit overnight, then wash off in the morning.

3. Baking soda

Although baking soda only produces a subtle lightening effect but with consistent use, you will surely get a beautiful result.  Baking soda has lots of hair-beneficial properties which make it an ideal hair shampoo also. This substance is very much easy to get – in local stores and supermarkets.


Mix ⅓ or ¼ cup of baking soda to a little amount of water to form a not-so-thick paste. Apply to your entire hair evenly as you would your shampoo. Let the paste sit for 5 to 10 minutes if you have the time, then rinse out. Apply your normal conditioner afterwards.

4. Salt

This food ingredient has also been proven to be a super-effective hair lightening substance.


Get your salt and mix ½ cup of salt to a small amount of water to form a paste. Apply mixture evenly to your wet hair and expose to the sun for 10 to 20 minutes. Wash your hair afterwards.

If you do not like the idea of sitting in the sun, you can just let the mixture sit in your hair for 15 minutes; then you wash off.

5. Olive oil + Cinnamon + Honey

This is a beautiful hair lightening combo. The three ingredients all have lightening properties in them, so be ready for a quick result. Asides lightening effects, these three substances also have other hair benefits. Olive oil will help to moisturize your hair and strengthen each strand; honey will add a lovely sheen to your hair and increase its volume; cinnamon will help stimulate your scalp and increase hair growth.


Mix 1 cup of original raw honey to 2 cups of distilled water, add one teaspoonful of cinnamon and one teaspoonful of olive oil. Mix ingredients together. Wet your hair and apply the mixture thoroughly to your hair. Cover with a shower cap and let it sit overnight. Wash off in the morning
